Catholic Schools Week

Catholic schools throughout the nation celebrated Catholic Schools Week, January 28 through February 3, 2007. Catholic Schools Week is an annual national celebration of the important role that Catholic schools across the country play in providing a values-centered education. This year's national theme was "Catholic Schools: the Good News in Education." Catholic schools are proud of the intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical, and social values that are emphasized in their schools.

During Catholic Schools Week, students, parents, and teachers at Christ the King School celebrated with a variety of special religious, social and recreational activities. The week began with an opening Mass, followed by an Open House which highlighted the diversity of Christ the King School. Each class chose a different country, whose culture was then highlighted through student work.  From table settings, to native food, to flags and maps, the children delved into each culture with an intellectual curiosity that made their teachers proud!  Displays of the children’s work welcomed parents and visitors alike to step into a world apart from the typical, and yet intrinsically connected to it.

The festivities of the week also included social events that allowed the students and faculty to celebrate our Catholic heritage in ways that spoke to the joy of inclusion in this marvelous school.  From Monday’s crazy hair day, through to Friday’s blue and orange day, the community of Christ the King School shared with one another the great delight that is felt as a member of this tight-knit group.  Other activities included a special person lunch, a teacher swap, and a pep assembly.  The entire week focused on what a treasure the Church holds in her schools.

A collection of cleaning supplies was also taken for Catholic Charities Hope House, which offers temporary shelter and support to DuPage County families who are situationally homeless.  A sense of giving to those less fortunate is a pillar of this school.  In the spirit of sharing blessing with others, students brought in donations of cleaning supplies.  They were then issued a special pass enabling them to have an out of uniform day. This collection had 100% participation of students in pre-school through 8th grade. Seven boxes of cleaning supplies were collected. The cleaning supplies were greatly appreciated, and the students did good as they did well.  The tradition of service continues at Christ the King School!
